Land Transport The best way to travel around Male’ is by foot. It only takes 20 minutes to walk the length of the island and 45 minutes to walk around the entire island. Buses are not available, but you can take a taxi anywhere in Male’ for Mrf15.00 (US$1.50), with luggage there’s an extra charge of Mrf5.00. Taxis operate 24 hours a day and can be called by phone. Sea Transport A dhoni, a traditional all-purpose vessel powered by a diesel engine, is the cheapest and most common way to get from island to island. The transfer fee between Male’ and the airport can range from US$1-$50, depending on weather conditions, time of day, and the driver. Negotiating is allowed. Dhonis can be rented all day for US$80. Air Transport Air taxies (sea planes) are available. A 15-minute ride (1.5 hours by speed boat, 4 hours by dhoni) normally costs $150 round trip. |
