Things to Do

Entertainment
There is not much organized entertainment in Male’. Because alcohol is prohibited in Male’, there are no nightclubs or bars. In the evenings, many people stroll down Male’s main road, Majeedhee Magu, as shops are open until 11pm. There are also a few cinemas, which show mainly Indian movies.

Concerts
There are frequent concerts around Male’. Maldivian music is a blend of Hindi, Arabic, and even some Western pop. Concerts are usually free and are a great way to experience Maldivian culture. However, if you applaud after a song, you’ll find yourself being the only one clapping.

Activities
Male’ does not have a beach, but the beautiful ocean can still be enjoyed. A seawall surrounds the island, except for a small area on the eastern side where an artificial beach has been built. You’ll find most people here in the late afternoons. The beach is crowded on Fridays, so take this into consideration.
**Women swimmers must wear at least a T-shirt and knee-length shorts.

Surfing
There’s a great surf break in Male’ called “Lonuziyaarai Kolhu.” It’s located on the eastern side of the island. Because you don’t have to travel long distances by boat to get there, this break is one of the best and cheapest places to surf.

Diving
Dive charters can be rented in Male’ and can take you to some of the best dive spots in the Maldives. There are also dive shops in Male’ where you can rent equipment.

Villingili
It’s also worth it to visit Male’s neighboring island, Villingili. It only takes 10 minutes by ferry and costs US$.50. Don’t be confused by which ferry to board when you get to the harbor. One of the friendly locals will gladly help you get on the right boat. Villingili is a much calmer pace than Male’. You can relax on the beautiful white beaches, swim, or go snorkeling. There is also a place to rent catamarans, banana boats, jet skis, and other water sports equipment.
**Clothing requirements for around the island and swimming is the same as in Male’.
